  • The Museum will remain open during most of the work for visitors to experience the existing museum galleries

The Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum, one of Winchester’s six military museums, has unveiled its new name ahead of an exciting programme of redevelopment: The Rifleman’s Museum.

Since 1989, the Museum has told the story of the Royal Green Jackets and its antecedent regiments—a fascinating story covering the rise of entirely new military tactics and technology that proved key at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815—to show how riflemen have always been unique, both historically and in the modern British Army. Now, an upcoming programme of redevelopment will expand this story to cover the formation of The Rifles regiment in 2007 and illustrate how nearly three hundred years of history has shaped the modern regiment in appearance, ethos, and training.

The redevelopment is currently underway, with work in the Museum due to begin in the summer and finish in autumn, when the new gallery will open to visitors. As well as new exhibits, the gallery will include a variety of interactive activities for children, as well as providing a flexible space for events and temporary exhibitions within the Museum.

The Museum will remain open to visitors for as much of this period as possible, but visitors are encouraged to consult the Museum’s website and social media to keep up with any announcements about closures.

“We’re thrilled to announce our new name as the first step in our redevelopment. Our role as a museum has always been to tell a story that means something to all of our visitors—whether they’re learning about riflemen for the first time or are themselves veterans or serving soldiers. We hope that when our new gallery is open to the public later this year, it will allow us to tell the complete story of the rifleman from the very beginning through to the present day.”

The Museum has also launched a new website (https://www.riflemansmuseum.co.uk) today, providing information on the Museum, the history of riflemen, an online collection, and much more.
