We have all seen the movie The Great Escape. And as a result, we all think we know the story of this legendary mass breakout of prisoners-of-war from Stalag Luft III, deep in the heart of the Third Reich, in March 1944. But do we really? In this highly thought-provoking and entertaining talk, Guy Walters will challenge the myths and preconceptions of this celebrated wartime tale. Did the POWs really have a duty to escape? How many actually wanted to do so? Did a mass escape attempt really hamper the German war effort? What chances did any of the escapers have of getting home? Just how good really were the forged passes and escape clothes? And – most importantly – did an American really pinch a motorbike and attempt to jump over the border…?
Guy Walters is an historian, TV presenter, and journalist. He has written several books, including The Real Great Escape, and he has appeared in over 100 TV shows on the likes of Channel 4, History, Smithsonian, Yesterday, as well as many channels all over the world. He regularly takes tours to the site of the Great Escape and Colditz, the next of which will be in April 2026.
