Our Mission as The Rifleman's Museum

The Rifleman’s Museum chronicles the rich history of the British Army’s Rifle Regiments, tracing their origins from the 18th century to the present-day regiment, The Rifles. It explores the revolutionary approach of these elite soldiers, highlighting their unique customs, traditions, and the innovative tactics that set them apart from other regiments.

Through carefully curated exhibits and detailed narratives, the Museum aims to illustrate the evolution of the Rifle Regiments and their lasting influence on the modern army. It celebrates the defining qualities of riflemen—adaptability, innovation, and an enduring spirit—while showcasing the profound legacy they’ve built over centuries of service.

Our Mission as a Military Museum

There are many military and regimental museums across the country, and we believe that they have an important role to play. Our mission as a military museum focuses on five key principles: preservation, education, commemoration, research, and community.

Preservation

The museum holds an important component of our national story. It is dedicated to the preservation of objects, documents and stories relating to the history of Riflemen from the 1740s to the present day.

Education

We help visitors of all ages and backgrounds explore the history of riflemen through fascinating displays, talks, and activities for all, including seasonal activities for children and educational programs for school groups. Serving Riflemen can also connect with their rich heritage through our comprehensive exhibits and events.

Commemoration

With over 7,000 medals (including 30 Victoria Crosses) in the museum collection, around 70% of which are on display, the museum commemorates many individual soldiers and stories, keeping the stories of their bravery alive to be shared with future generations.

Research

With a vast collection of archival materials, as well as a research library, the museum is a useful first port of call for those seeking information about the actions, battles and engagements of Rifle Regiments since their formation including the Rifle Brigade, King’s Royal Rifle Corp, Royal Green Jackets and The Rifles.

Community

We are proud to be at the heart of a thriving community of veterans and serving riflemen, as well as Friends of the Museum, volunteers, and visitors. We are an important part of the historic fabric of Winchester, its heritage, and its community. We’re also the hub for a network of museums of other forming regiments of The Rifles.
