The Rifleman’s Museum Trust provides governance to a Ministry of Defence part-funded museum, accredited by the Arts Council (Registration Number: 959). It is also a Charitable Incorporated Organisation with a Constitution and registered charity number 1156207.
The Rifleman’s Museum Trust was previously The Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum Trust which became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation on 17 March 2014 and absorbed all assets belonging to the previous unincorporated trust (registered charity number 1009691) in January 2015.
On 1 January 2024 the Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum Trust agreed to take on all assets from the Rifles Museum Trust (charity number 1174293) which disbanded. In January 2025 The Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum Trust became The Rifleman’s Museum Trust and the museum was renamed The Rifleman’s Museum.
Mission Statement
The purpose of The Rifleman’s Museum Trust is to collect, document, preserve and provide access to material relating to The Rifles and its antecedent rifle regiments, and to use and interpret this material for the education and benefit of members of the Armed Forces and the public of all ages and backgrounds.
Vision
The Trustees’ vision for the future is that The Rifleman’s Museum should be widely recognised as a dynamic and progressive constituent of Winchester’s Military Museums and RIFLES heritage that capitalises on the excellence of its collection and modern technology to reach out and provide information and an experiences for visitors that excites, inspires, and educates, and that prompts them to return generating sufficient income for the Museum to develop and flourish.
Trustees
The Museum Trustees hold routine Board meetings three times a year. The members of the Board of Trustees are:
Brig James Plastow CBE (Chair)
James completed a full career in the Army serving in the Royal Green Jackets and in other senior command, management and policy appointments. He is now involved with a number of charities in the UK and Africa.
Mr Nigel Atkinson
Nigel has been HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire since 2014 and is an experienced Trustee of various organisations. He served with the Royal Green Jackets for 6 years and spent most of his working life in the Leisure and Retail sector.
Mr Charles Cohen
Charles has worked in the City for 35 years living in Switzerland, Singapore and Jersey. He did a short service commission with the Royal Green Jackets serving in Germany and Northern Ireland.
Mr Pete Corbin
Pete has worked in corporate communications, digital marketing and reputation management for over 30 years. He is currently the Head of Engagement for The Rifles and previously served with The Royal Green Jackets.
Mr Guy Fetherstonhaugh KC
Guy is a barrister specialising in property law. Prior to starting at the Bar, he was an officer in 2RGJ for four years, with service in Northern Ireland, Zimbabwe-Rhodesia, Germany, the USA and Cyprus.
Mrs Sue Heath-Caldwell
Sue has worked in an advisory, management and training role within the voluntary sector for 20 years following a former career in teaching. She helps the team look after the volunteers that are so important to the museum’s operation.
Col Nick Ilic MBE QGM
Nick completed a full career in the Army serving in The Light Infantry, The Royal Green Jackets, The Rifles and on the General Staff. He was also Chair of The Rifles Heritage Committee and has a keen interest in military history with a particular focus on the Balkans and Salonika Front.
Mr Stephen Little
Steve has been a project manager for 23 years in the defence and cultural sectors. He is also an Army Reservist with 28 years’ service with the Royal Engineers.
Dr Ruth Taylor
Dr Ruth Taylor brings expertise in interpretation, learning and strategy having worked for more than 35 years in key positions in the arts and heritage sector including The National Trust, Natural History Museum, Royal Horticultural Society and Artswork.
Mr Stephen Wood
Stephen is a retired museum professional (curator at the National Army Museum 1971-83 and Keeper of the National War Museum of Scotland 1983-2000). He is now a freelance consultant and researcher for collectors, auction houses and dealers and so brings to the Board more than 50 years’ experience in national museums and with historical artefacts.

Museum Mentor
Mrs Rachel Wragg, Museum Development Manager
Rachel is an experienced Curator and Museum Practitioner who brings extensive knowledge of the management and interpretation of collections gained in a variety of contexts. She oversaw the development and management of a new public museum to showcase the collections of Winchester College and currently specializes in gallery re-generation and audience development.
